Robert J. Garvin died peacefully at his Boston Edison Historic District residence five days shy of his 79th birthday. Robert was born in Decatur, Illinois, at his parents' house. His older brother did not come home from the European battlefields of WWII. At seventeen, Robert enlisted in the United States Navy, and because of his decoding skills, Robert was assigned battle tug ship as the cryptographer. F. Lincoln Grahifs mentions Robert's efforts in his book The Story of a United States Navy Tug and her Crew in World War II.
